If you’re in Medellín, I highly recommend this day trip to Guatapé — This was the highlight of my Colombia trip! Oscar was our guide and he was amazing. He talked about life in Colombia and we got to know him really well throughout the day. It’s a full day tour and involves walking up 708 steps to the top of the rock, walking around town, and picking coffee beans at a farm, so be prepared with walking shoes!
Oscar picked us up from Juan Valdez coffee shop and drove us to Guatapé. We climbed up the stairs to the top of El Peñón de Guatapé
The view was great at the top.
There were lots of vendors selling these ice pops that were perfect for the hot day. They had mango, passion fruit, and even combos.
After that, Oscar took us to a fruit stand and introduced us to these fruits.
It was cool because I had never tasted these before and would probably not have on my own!
We strolled around the small town of Guatapé, where it was full of beautiful colorful murals.
He told us that in the old days, people would paint murals outside their home that represented their occupations/passions or something that’s of their identity.
I loved how colorful the streets were. So much art and inspiration everywhere!!
We had lunch at La Fogata
Then we went to an unassuming, small family-owned coffee farm, Finca La Riviera. We got to pick coffee beans from the actual plants and saw the entire process of making coffee from beginning to end.
After we had our coffees and bought our coffee beans, Oscar drove us back to Medellín and we parted ways. I will never forget his hospitality and warmth, and all the stories he told.
